Nationwide Building Society is the UK’s largest retail bank, serving 16M+ members.
Within the Home Propositions Department, I worked with an awesome team to build two apps:
Hearth was created to help young people build healthier finance habits, and reach money milestones.
The Landlord Works offered a digital solution to help landlords manage their properties, finances, and tax returns with Open Banking technology.

HEARTH
Let’s start with Hearth!
I entered an essential Product/Design sprint with an open brief to answer the following question:
How can we support young people on their mission to buy a home by helping them better understand their finances?
With a stronghold of research on the topic, we worked together to brainstorm our ‘ideal’ features in a personal banking app, touching on key “pain points” such as bill splitting, and budget forecasting.
Plotting out archetypes was a visually stimulating way to understand our audience: while some 18-35 year olds embrace the nomadic lifestyle, others will sacrifice holidays and luxuries to speedrun onto the property ladder.
the real MVP
Before we could deliver an MVP product to users, our team used data from UX interviews to create our product wireframes.
I proactively took part in collaborative exercises to land on a product name, and later wrote copy for the app.
With a fantastic Product Design Lead, I learnt a lot about the power of pitching and bouncing ideas around the room.
The Landlord Works
I designed our promotional advert images in the Adobe Suite.
The Landlord Works was created as a separate app in tandem with Hearth. Data from industry experts, such as BVA BDRC and Zoopla, consistently reported on trends in the sector that directly impact young people. One of the key challenges we faced was packaging Open Banking in a way that provided transparency and simplicity; we understood that our target audience were skeptics of new technology, and so we would need to change their minds.
‘Gold standard’ support - NBS
My role at The Landlord Works covered many areas including:
Developing our tone of voice.
Merging our brand guidelines with The Mortgage Works, the UK’s largest buy-to-let mortgage lender.
Producing all copy for the website and app.
Leading the creation of downloadable content, including independently creating a 22-page A-Z guide for landlords during the 2020-21 calendar year.
Managing social media channels with daily posts across Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Supporting PPC ad campaigns with a 6-figure ad spend on Google Ads, writing ad copy, and using keyword tools.
Tracking stats through Semrush and Google Analytics.
Writing weekly articles and PR pieces based on published industry reports, and legislative changes.
Attending UX calls to discover the pain points of our users, and their typical interaction on the app.
